Hibiscus syriacus
Rose-of-sharon

A five-valved dehiscent capsule persisting through the winter, the fruits of this species form an excellent identification characteristic. The tan-colored capsules are 3/4 - 1" long and oval, before opening into a wide-spreading 5-parted structure releasing the small brown hairy seeds.
