The smaller cones of this species are ovoid, upright and short-stalked, changing from reddish green to brown at maturity. The cones are 1/2 - 3/4" in length, smaller than those of either Larix decidua or Larix kaempferi. The overlapping scales are not reflexed at the apex, distinguishing this species from Larix kaempferi and are glabrous, distinguishing it from Larix decidua.
