Common sassafras

A native pioneer species, the sassafras sports an interesting habit and excellent fall color. Before it was determined to be carcinogenic by the FDA in 1960, the roots were used for teas and as a flavoring for root beer.

Habit:Pyramidal-irregular, picturesque, sometimes suckering at the base, open-grown trees usually with very wide branch angles
