Acer campestre
Hedge maple

Culture: The hedge maple is slow-growing but tolerant of poor, dry alkaline sites and air pollution. Its growth in very dry sites will benefit from use of organic mulches. It performs well in high pH soils and is tolerant of full sun or partial shade.

Few insects, if any, will bother this plant but verticillium wilt has been reported on occasion.

Usage: The adaptability of this species makes it useful as a specimen, and its small size is well-suited for environments where height restrictions may exist. Its tolerance of shearing (as is often evidenced in Europe) is indicative of its common name. Hedge maple is a top notch landscape tree. Poor fall color is the only drawback.
