Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala

Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala
Amur maple

Culture: The Amur maple is easy to grow and is quite adaptable to a variety of sites. It is tolerant of full sun or light shade and will withstand heavy pruning.

There are few pest problems, although frost cracks can occur and verticillium wilt can be serious.

Usage: The combination of quick growth, nice fruit, and good fall color displays make this plant a good specimen, patio, or container plant, and it can also be used as a hedge. Amur maple has been used as a highway planting because of toughness and salt tolerance. Care must be taken, for it can spread to uncultivated areas by seed. As a result it has been named as a pest by the Illinois Department of Conservation. I remember seeing some odd looking foliage resting in the crook of a tree at the Morton Arboretum, and it turned out to be an Amur maple growing in some accumulated leaves between the branches of an oak!
