| Acer palmatum Japanese mapleCulture: Japanese maples need careful attention when selecting a site. They perform best in moist, slightly acid soils high in organic matter, and should have partial shade in an area protected from the wind. When transplanting, they should either be containerized or balled and burlapped. There are very few pest problems, but it is limited by cold hardiness and can be injured by late spring frosts. Usage: This is an excellent landscape plant as a specimen, an accent, along shrub borders or in groupings. The small size, variety of cultivars and outstanding characteristics makes this a quality landscape plant. It is also a bonsai species, traditionally used in Japan for the moyogi (informal upright) and shakan (slanting) styles. |
