Acer saccharinum
Silver maple

Culture: Easy to transplant because of their fibrous root systems, silver maples are also tolerant of a wide range of soils.

Several leaf diseases such as anthracnose are disfiguring, while a variety of cankers cause a loss of limbs. Many insects such as the cottony maple scale and bladder gall mite seem to flock to the tree, but are not serious.

Usage: Although very adaptable, inexpensive, and useful under difficult conditions, this tree should be used with caution in residential situations because of its weak wood and pest problems. Like so many other "weedy" native species that are not ideal for landscaping, it is nevertheless an important part of the natural ecosystem, providing food (samaras) and shelter in wetland areas.
