| Ailanthus altissima Tree of heavenExtremely coarse in appearance, the yellowish-brown to reddish-brown glabrous stems have very large "V"-shaped leaf scars and slightly raised orangish brown lenticels. When viewed in cross-section, the pith is a solid tan -- my students know it as "the peanut butter plant" because it looks like someone filled the stem with peanut butter. Young vigorous stems often have a glaucous waxy haze covering them and can range in thickness from 3/8" to 1" or more in diameter. |
