Aralia spinosa
Devil's walking stick,Hercules' club

Culture: A very tough and easy to grow, this species tolerates most conditions except wet. It is drought tolerant and grows best in full sun.

No serious problems occur on this plant.

Usage: Aralia spinosa is an interesting plant that looks somewhat tropical or exotic in leaf with interesting horizontal lines. In winter, the effect changes to vertical with coarse, bare, frequently unbranched stems, if grown as a suckering shrub. It could be used in a mass planting near buildings where soils tend to be poor and conditions difficult. A related species is Aralia elata which has a variegated form. All of the aralias are difficult to locate for purchase and tend to be expensive when available.
