Lustrous and dark evergreen, the very spiny leaves are narrow elliptic, alternate and 2-3" long. The leaf margins are only slightly turned under and bear numerous sharp spines - generally greater than 10 pair. The undersides are much lighter in coloration, and the leaves turn reddish-bronze in the winter. Like other barberries, the leaves are clustered on small spurs.
