Betula lenta
Sweet birch,Cherry birch

Culture: Sweet birch transplants best in the spring. It prefers rich soils but will tolerate heavy and dry soils with a low pH.

Birches are susceptible to several insect and disease problems. Leaf rust, cankers, wood-decay, and mildew; insects include aphids, leaf miners and skeletonizer. This species is notably resistant to the bronze birch borer.

Usage: Sweet birch makes an excellent tree for the Midwest where the pH is low. It is not widely used due to the lack of white bark and intolerance of high pH soils. It is known for its excellent fall color and wintergreen odor of the stems.
