Carpinus betulus
European hornbeam

Culture: European hornbeam is best transplanted in the spring. It is adaptable to many soil types and prefers full sun. The formal habit of the cultivars rarely result in the need for pruning; however, it is tolerant of heavy pruning as evidenced by many formal European garden hedges. This species performs best when supplied with organic mulch.

There are no serious pest problems unless trees are stressed, then canker, leafspot and twig blight may attack.

Usage: Excellent small landscape tree. It has a formal appearance and fits well in many situations. Hardiness problems occur in areas north of zone 5a. In Europe it is commonly used as a specimen or hedge plant.
