Carpinus caroliniana American hornbeamCulture: American hornbeam is best transplanted from containers in spring. It is tolerant of full sun to heavy shade and adaptable to most soils. Selections need to be made for uniform habit and fall color. Hardiness varies with the seed source. Southern grown plants have not done well in the upper Midwest. Cankers are a problem that is probably related to lack of hardiness from southern seed sources. Usage: Good plant for shade and moist conditions. Deserves to be used more in the landscape but northern selections should be made to avoid hardiness problems. |
