Carya ovata
Shagbark hickory

The fruit is a nut enclosed in a 4-valved casing that splits away into four equal quarters. Hickory nuts are valued by both wildlife and people. The nuts of this species are smaller, 1-2" diameter, and have a thinner husk than those of Carya laciniosa.
