Castanea dentata
American chestnut

This species produces sweet, edible, brown and shiny nuts in a prickly involucre. The 2 - 3" diameter involucre containing the nuts usually drops from the tree around the first frost in fall. The nuts are edible and prized as well by deer, squirrels and other animals.
