Catalpa bignonioides
Southern catalpa

Culture: This native plant is commonly found on stream banks and in low woods. It is tolerant of wet or dry conditions and extreme heat.

Several pest problems including Verticillium wilt and powdery mildew can occur on this species. Trees generally live 40 to 50 years, then decline quickly.

Usage: It's large leaves create a tropical appearance and the flowers are showy. Generally, it is difficult to fit into the modern landscape. It has a lesser height and broader crown than the northern catalpa.
