Celastrus scandens
American bittersweet

Borne on female plants, the attractive three-lobed capsules, are the main reason gardeners cultivate this species. The yellow capsules which ripen in October are 1/3" across with crimson seed coverings. The fruit is used in dried arrangements. Both male and female plants are needed for fruit production.
