Eastern redbud

Scaly and slightly exfoliating in short, tattered strips, the dark gray to grayish black bark exposes a distinctive orange-red to rust colored under-bark. It often seems that the under-bark develops a ruddier cast in the winter months, fading away as summer approaches.
