Comptonia peregrina
Sweetfern

Culture: Difficult to transplant unless moved as sod or container grown. Sweetfern prefers full sun to partial shade and acid peaty sand. It can tolerate very infertile sites as it can fix atmospheric nitrogen.

No serious problems are associated with Sweetfern.

Usage: Sweetfern could possibly be used in naturalized landscapes, rock gardens and as a small facer plant for its foliage effects. It has interesting foliage with a nice fragrance but lacks other ornamental characteristics found on many other shrubs. Its tolerance of infertile and dry sites lends it to use on roadsides.
