Cornus mas
Corneliancherry dogwood

Resembling hot air balloons, the flower buds are fat, 1/4" long, globose, valvate and finely pubescent. The easy to identify flower buds are initially yellowish-brown and become dark gray over the winter. The vegetative buds are valvate, gradually tapering and divergent.
