Crataegus crus-galli
Cockspur hawthorn

Covered with long and extremely sharp 1 1/2 - 3" curved and downward pointing thorns, the stems exhibit a zig-zagging appearance. Most of the thorns are approximately 3" in length, the longest of the hawthorns. Young stems are reddish-brown with an onion-skin-like exfoliation, becoming glabrous and light gray with a very slight orangish cast with age.
