Crataegus mollis
Downy hawthorn

Culture: Like most hawthorns, this species prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils in full sun, but can tolerate almost any pH range.

Cedar-hawthorn rust can be extremely problematic for this species. In many years the leaves are heavily dotted with orange. The rust also causes considerable distortion of new stem growth. The susceptibility of this species to the rust, greatly limits its potential use.

Usage: Not commonly used in modern landscapes because of its susceptibility to cedar hawthorn rust, this is a worthwhile species that should be preserved where found or used for naturalizing purposes. It can make a great specimen in lower-maintenance, open or edge-of-the-woods areas.
