Winged euonymus or Burning bushCulture: Winged Euonymus prefers moist, well drained soils and it transplants easily. It will tolerate heavy pruning, and thus is sometimes used in sheared hedges. Supplemental water is needed during extended dry periods. Unlike the scale-susceptible forms of the other Euonymus species, this species has no serious problems. This species has the potential to escape cultivation. The Morton Arboretum has considerable problems with this species invading its native woodlands.Usage: An excellent plant for the landscape. It is useful as a specimen, or in large masses, as a hedge plant or in any other location a quality large shrub is needed. The large wings on the stems catch the snow in winter adding a textural interest to the drab winter landscape. The ultimate large size of this species does not seem to be appreciated by many gardeners, as it can often be seen planted too close to buildings and adjacent plants. |
