Fagus grandifolia
American beech

New stems are slender, smooth and shiny brown, while older stems are silver-gray. The stems on this species turn silvery gray in the second and third year when they are only 1/8" in diameter, while those of the European beech do not turn silvery until about 3/4" in diameter.
