Resembling a salted pretzel, the squarish 4-sided stems are yellowish brown with prominent raised lenticels. The pith 12" or more behind the apex is chambered in the internodes and solid at the nodes. The pith is incompletely formed at the stem apex and becomes hollow on old stems near the base of the plant. The chambered pith characteristic is variable and can lead to frustration in identification.
