Franklinia alatamaha
Franklin tree

Culture: This species performs best in full sun to light shade but will tolerate moderate shade. It requires moist soils with excellent drainage to avoid vascular wilt problems. This species is difficult to transplant.

The Franklinia is quite susceptible to a vascular wilt problem caused either by Verticillium or Phytophthora species. The soil-borne disease is devastating to the plant, especially in the South, where the disease organisms are commonly present. The life expectancy of most specimens is therefore commonly quite short. A large plant, in any location, should be cherished.

Usage: This species makes a handsome specimen plant.
