| Fraxinus pennsylvanica Green ashCulture: Green ashes prefer moist soils in full sun, as it is typically found in bottomlands and along riverbanks. It can withstand drought, calcareous or acid soils, and salt spray. Scale and ash borers can be serious on this species. Although susceptible to borers, this species is much less troubled by them than the white or European ash. A yet to be fully described problem called Ash Yellows can cause significant decline of specimens in the upper Midwest and eastern U.S. Usage: If planted, cultivars are probably best -- the variability present in seed-grown stock is too great to get predictable results. Many trees look ratty and unkempt, so are not ideal choices for residential landscapes. High tolerance towards adverse conditions does make it an ideal selection where other plants will not grow. It makes a good fast-growing and adaptable shade tree, and it is used along streets and in parking lots. |
