Vernal witchhazelCulture: A plant native to gravelly stream banks, it performs well under a variety of conditions. It is tolerant of poorly drained to dry soils and high pH's, and does well in full sun to moderate shade. This species is transplanted from containers or is balled and burlapped. Leaf galls may be a problem, otherwise few pests. Usage: A durable low maintenance plant that works well in groups or mass plantings. The early flowering date is a good indicator of the onset of spring. The flowers are small and often go unnoticed, especially if plants are not located in front of a dark or evergreen background. Two good selections are the cultivars 'Autumn Embers' and 'Sandra'. |
