| Juglans cinerea ButternutCulture: The butternut prefers the rich, moist soils of bottomland areas, but is tolerant of drier conditions. This species is not present in great numbers in the wild and is rare in the landscape. It is useful for naturalizing and provides excellent food for wildlife. Like the black walnut this species contains allelopathic chemicals that discourage the growth of other plants nearby. Therefore, do not place near vegetable or flower gardens. The extensive taproot of this species makes it very difficult to transplant. Thus, only small specimens are available. |
