Larix kaempferi
Japanese larch

Culture: This species prefers moist, well drained soils on sunny sites. It does not tolerate shade, very dry sites or polluted conditions. Transplanting readily, this species is a fast growing tree.

Two serious insect pests are the larch casebearer and the larch sawfly; cankers, needle rusts and wood decay can also be serious disease problems. Despite these problems, most gardeners will only likely encounter occasional problems with the casebearer. Dirr reports less problems with canker that Larix decidua.

Usage: Effective in parks and other large areas as a screen or specimen, the Japanese larch's soft texture helps to cut harsh lines and also adds a naturalizing effect to the landscape. It is a beautiful addition to any landscape.
