Magnolia liliiflora
Lily magnolia

Culture: Like other magnolias, this species prefers full sun to partial shade with moist well drained soils and a slightly acidic pH.

By late summer, plants are often raggy looking with leaves showing mildew and leaf tatter.

Usage: An uncommon landscape plant as a species but commonly present as part of a hybrid. Breeding programs have used this species as a source of purple or pink flower color when hybridizing with the white-flowered species. The cultivars 'Nigra' and 'O'Neill' are common dark purple forms. The cultivar 'Nigra' is one of the parents of the "Little Girl Hybrids" such as 'Ann', 'Betty', 'Jane' and 'Susan'.
