| Mahonia aquifolium Oregon grapehollyCulture: This species prefers moist acid to neutral soils and needs protection from hot or cold winds to prevent burning. A slightly shady location is best, although the plant can tolerate moderate shade. Full sun should only be provided if the climate is mild and humid. The most serious problem is leaf scorch caused by harsh winter climates. Barberry aphid, whitefly, and scale can also be problematic. Usage: This species can be used as a specimen or en masse as part of a shrub border. There are a number of cultivars available, including plants with a dwarf size ('Compactum'), orange flowers ('Apollo') or orangish new foliage ('Orange Flame') and either red ('Forescate') or purple ('Atropurpureum') winter coloration. |
