Mahonia bealei
Leatherleaf mahonia

Culture: As with most mahonias, protection from drying winter winds is most important. Soils should be moist and slightly acidic, and this species performs best in partial to moderate shade.

To avoid leaf burning due to winter dessication, locate the plant in a moist location with protection from winter winds. Its lack of cold hardiness takes this plant out of consideration for the upper Midwest. No serious insects or diseases seem to bother this species.

Usage: The bold and coarse texture of this species make it a noticeable specimen where ever it is used. The stiff habit however does not allow it to blend readily with other plants. Although some pruning with help to make it more uniform, there are limits as to what the best pruning can accomplish. Locate this plant to draw attention and place it where the fragrant flowers and blue fruits can be appreciated.
