Malus sargentii
Sargent flowering crabapple

Culture: Like other crabapples, this species should be grown in full sun with a moist, well-drained and acidic to neutral soil. It transplants rather easily.

An excellent crabapple for disease resistance, this species is not troubled by fireblight, cedar-apple rust and only slightly by scab. Dirr reports good Japanese beetle resistance.

Usage: The Sargent flowering crabapple makes a beautiful specimen either alone or in multiples. Its short stature with branches low to the ground makes it useful in small situations. The one negative feature of this species is its tendency to flower light in alternate years.
