| Morus alba White mulberryInitially emerging white, these multiple fruits are a syncarp of drupes appearing blackberry-like, except smaller and narrower. With maturity, they become red, and finally deep purplish-black. The 1/2 - 1" oblong fruits are edible by both humans and wildlife. Birds seem to enjoy staining windshields and air-drying linens with purple stains. There is a distinctive taste to the fruit, and it is excellent in pies and tarts, and can be eaten with the stems still attached. The spread of the seed in bird droppings is responsible for the weed-like spread of this species. |
