Nyssa sylvatica
Black gum,Black tupelo

Fall coloration on the black tupelo is outstanding and represents one of the best displays of any native tree species. It ranges from a bright yellow to orange to scarlet to purple. When these plants come into fall color, I can count on phone calls asking for the identity of this species. The glossiness of the leaves enhances the brilliant colors.
