Alternate, simple and elliptic-ovate, the 2 to 5" long leaves are slightly pubescent and have doubly serrate margins and veins that fork at the ends near the margin. The leaves look similar to those of Carpinus caroliniana except that those on Carpinus lack pubescence and have veins that do not fork at the ends.
