Pachysandra terminalis
Japanese pachysandra

Culture: This species prefers moist acidic soils high in organic matter on a shaded site. When placed in full sun, burning or desiccation of the foliage usually occurs. This plant tolerates heavy shade, and even grows under dense, shallow-rooted trees. The dense canopy formed by this species is quite effective at controlling weeds.

Providing the plants are properly sited, this species is mostly trouble-free, only occasionally having problems with leaf blight, canker and scale.

Usage: This popular groundcover looks stunning in deep shade if taken care of culturally. Otherwise, the plants tend to look chlorotic and in disarray. Plants grown in shade form a beautiful dark green carpet.
