Borne in fascicles of 5, the 2-3" evergreen needles are straight, stiff, and densely set. Each needle is finely toothed with a blunt-pointed apex. They are dark green outside, with the inside surfaces bearing bluish-white stomatal bands. The leaves are retained 4-5 years before falling. The leaf sheaths abscise when young.
