American sycamoreCulture: Native to wetland regions across the Eastern United States, sycamores prefer moist, rich soils in full sun to partial shade. Like most fast-growing trees, it tends to be messy, often dropping limbs and large leaves all around its perimeter, presenting constant maintenance problems. Anthracnose, scales, bagworms, borers, witches' broom, and frost cracks can be problematic. Anthracnose is particularly bad in wet seasons. Usage: Due to its large size and propensity towards messiness, this species is probably best left to its native habitats and kept out of the urban landscape. If space and maintenance are not an issue, the creamy white bark makes this a striking plant in all seasons. |
