Borne only on female trees, the small gray-brown capsules have large masses of attached cottony hairs which aide in fruit dispersal. The dropping of fruits in June often leads to an appearance of snow or cotton-like covering of the ground for a distance downwind. The ability of these fruits to block air conditioning and air exchange filters has led to the ban of female Eastern cottonwoods or even the entire species in some urban areas.
