Alternate, simple and obovate, the 4 to 8" leaves of this species have 5 to 9 rounded and entire lobes with deep sinuses between the lobes. The cuneate leaf bases easily distinguish the leaves of this species from the auriculate leaf bases of Quercus robur. The upper leaf surface is a rich dark green while the underside is a pale green. The new spring leaves are very delicate and red.
