The coarse and distinctive rough bark is thick and deeply ridged and furrowed. It is usually medium to dark gray or sometimes gray-brown in color. The thick bark is not only visually aesthetic; it also lends a degree of fire resistance to the tree, allowing it to survive occasional prairie grass fires in native savanna areas.
