| Quercus palustris Pin oakThe buds are conical to narrow ovate and 3/16 - 1/4" long, sharp-pointed, imbricate and slightly reddish-brown in color. The tips of the scales are reddish brown while the lower portion of the scales is tan-brown. The buds are much narrower and less pubescent than those of Quercus coccinea and shorter, less pubescent and less red than those of Quercus rubra. Small 1/8"-long one-year acorns borne on short lateral stems can be mistaken for buds on this species. The undeveloped acorns are broad ovate in shape. |
