Rhamnus cathartica
Common buckthorn

Culture: A very tough and durable tree that is easily transplanted and tolerates most conditions. It will tolerate shearing and will return even after continuous pruning to the ground. The birds eat the fruits and deposit the seeds everywhere. It has become a major pest in many areas.

Unfortunately, few insects or diseases damage this pest. Flint indicates that this species serves as an alternate host for the crown rust disease of oats, making its culture illegal in Canada and other areas where oats is an important crop.

Usage: Avoid using this plant and remove it where it is found. It invades native habitats and overtakes the naturalized plants by out-competing them for light and moisture. It has been used in the past in hedges, fencerows and other difficult sites.
