Rhodotypos scandens
Black jetbead

Culture: This tough and durable species can tolerate a wide range of soil types, acidic to neutral soils, air pollution, and will grow in full sun to moderate shade.

There are few problems with this species although twig blight may cause dieback of some small stems. If affected, prune off the infected shoots. Generally this is a trouble-free species.

Usage: The high durability of this plant is its number one selling point, making it ideal where some greenery is desired but little else will grow. It can make a good summer screening plant in shaded areas, and could be interesting offset against evergreens with dark foliage (Tsuga, Taxus, etc.. Otherwise, its flowers and fruit aren't showy enough to warrant planting in more prominent locations.
