Alternate and pinnately compound, the leaves produce 11-31 leaflets that are lanceolate-oblong, 2-5" long and serrate with a slightly acuminate apex. The leaves are glabrous above and glaucous below with petioles that are often purplish. The loss of the large pinnately compound leaves in fall changes the texture to quite coarse in the winter.
