Alternate and pinnately compound, the leaves have 11 to 31 lanceolate-oblong, 2-5" long, acute and serrate leaflets. The leaf bases are rounded while the apices are acuminate. The leaves, and especially the petiole and rachis, are pubescent when young in contrast to the glabrous leaves of Rhus glabra. New leaves are slow to emerge in spring.
