Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa'
Corkscrew hankow willow

Culture: This species prefers moist soils, but can tolerate either wet or dry sites. It should be located in full sun and be kept vigorous to maximize branch curling.

There are occasional problems with cankers and unfortunately this species has a relatively short life span.

Usage: The interesting branching pattern and soil moisture adaptability, from wet to dry, give it a place in the landscape for those interested in oddities. It should be noted that the level of contortion increases with more vigorous growth -- so if it is planted for drought tolerance, it will not grow as well and will not look as twisted. This is probably best sited as a single specimen or accent plant. Plan on replacement in 30 years or less.
