Sambucus canadensis
Common elderberry

Purple-black, berry-like and edible, the 3/16" drupes are borne in large terminal clusters in August and September. They are produced in such numbers that the heavy weight often inverts the clusters. The fruits are borne on attractive purplish red stems. The fruits are cherished by wildlife and have been widely used for jams, jellies and wine making.
